Seeing Agnes Monica is just seeing a total work, gravity, and an effort of timeless learning. Not a surprise if the cute lady successfully maintains her career as a singer, model, and actress. It’s not a mere success, but a success which makes a lot of people put some respects on and gives her some honors. Bear in mind that Agnes has started her career at the very tender age of six.

Conversely, there are still some who judges Agnes Monica as conceited, or at least stutter in carrying her social life that every so often demands what-so-called “tolerance”. It could be that the combination of her total work, an earnestness in creating, a desire to keep learning, and the successful she’s ripened has made Agnes Monica run out of time for just empty talks. Just maybe.

Convincingly, the winner of MTV’s best artist of the year considers herself a nerd – that conjures up some meanings yet tied by one personal character: unsocial.

“Actually I’m a nerd and I’m proud to be one. On my 23rd birthday party, my close friends awarded me ‘the most autistic person in the world’. Because they know that I’d rather spend my spare time by reading and studying. Everything relates to education.

“Other people see me doing activity in entertainment, but I as a mere job. In reality, I’m very conservative and believe in the natures of woman, but thought-wise I tend to be open-minded and liberal. So the image is I’m actually a successful nerd,” says Agnes Monica.

Maybe there are plenty of people forget how you started your career in showbiz. Could you please tell us again?

I started my career as a singer. I learned singing when I was 3 years-old. So, relatively speaking I’ve been in this entertainment business since forever. I started my career as a children singer when I was six. Now I’m 23 years-old. So it’s like I’ve been in the biz for my whole life.

You happened to be a presenter on TV as well, right?

Yes. After I became a children singer, I tried to be a kid presenter for Video Anak Anteve and Tralala Trilili. Besides presenting, I also made a duet album with Eza Yayang. Having made an album I tried my luck in acting world by playing a sinetron. My debut in the glass screen was sinetron Lupus, and next I played in Mr. Hologram and Pernikahan Dini (Premature Marriage).

How far did you get involved in the making of your albums?

Ever since I was a little, I always get involved with the making of my albums. I’m very total, especially in music, because music is my passion. In my latest album I became one of the producers, wrote the songs, and made the concept for the video clip as well. It’s undeniable that I got help from other people, but I wrote 80% of the storyboard. Now I’m settled in music. For me, music has run in my blood.

What is your key of success?
The key is only one, hard work. In order to be a superstar, you got to work extremely hard. Ordinary people make three times effort to reach their dreams, I have to make ten.

Really?
It should be. People around often said and advise me to not be so hard on myself. But the fact is, they are not in my position, so they don’t understand what I’ve been through. The point is; there should be sacrifices to arrive to this position right now. It’s not about popularity but achievement. You need to be hard on yourself. Otherwise, you won’t have principles that prop up your life in the future.

What are your principles of life?
My principle in life is, I will try to do the best I can on every aspect of my life. I’m very perfectionist and I don’t want to let my fans down.

What is the obligation that you carry in your position right now?
I have to conquer myself, cannot big-headed or feel easily satisfied. It’s like I'm having a marathon and be consistent on it. The most important is, every single day in your life, you got to be right. I don’t have time to make mistake. It’s not that I never make any, but I have to try not making one. Because once you do a mistake, everyone is going to judge you and try to bring you down.

But human doesn’t escape from mistake
It’s true. But I have a responsibility not only to myself but also my fans, and the people around me. They don’t look at me just because of my ability in singing and acting, but as a role model. That’s why I cannot let them down by doing foolish thing.

You’ve been in entertainment industry for almost your whole life. But you’re relatively still young. Have you ever felt that you have missed so many phases of your childhood and teen hood because of your job?
No. This is actually what I love to do. There are times I feel bored stiff antired. But doesn’t everyone else too? It’s where the sacrifice lay. It’s really important that when you feel tired you’ve got to get up and fight against it.

What else do you want to achieve?
Gosh…there is still many things. I never feel I’ve been on top. I always see bigger things over ones that I have got. That’s the reason why I never stay in comfort zone. Comfort zone is my only enemy. When I feel bumped, I try harder to make something better.

I heard that you’re back to university again
Umm…at this time I decided to get back for classes. I transferred from my previous university to Oregon State University and take political study.

But you were from school of law, why now politics
Because I like politics.

What do you think of Indonesia’s politic right now?
In my opinion, it won’t get anywhere better if we live in a pessimistic and easily-provoked environment, which hampers Indonesia’s development. We must see things from different perspective and take conclusion out of it.

What can we do to change that for the better?
Actually, to make an impact in the world -I don’t say it’s only for Indonesia- politics can be one of many ways. For me, make the difference for Indonesia means just be the best that you can be, either in economics, politics, social world, or even entertainment world. Never get satisfied with what-so-called good enough, because good enough is not good enough. I always tell my fans to raise their bars, because with that, they will be motivated to do better and get success.

What other occupations you’re doing now besides studying?
I’m now the member of Generation 21; it’s a group of 50 young leaders of Asia. Besides myself, there are Sandiaga Uno, economic expert Chatib Bisri, and also Dino Patti Jalal. In the conference recently, there was a question what to do to make Asia better. For me, the answer is: try to make the difference and do the best we can do.

What about your go-international obsession?
I keep pushing myself to make my achievement seen by other people outside Indonesia. I got Best Asian Artist Award in Korea twice. I do my own way to make Indonesia recognized. When I get good accomplishment, automatically I bring my country a good name.

The Asia Song Festival - South Korea's biggest event - puts on its sixth edition on September 19 at Sangam World Cup Stadium in Seoul and this year GMM Grammy is handing over representation responsibilities to Thailand's other major label, RS Public.

Waving the flag will be K-Otic, the five-member boy band featuring Panu "Pop" Jirakun, Wisawa "Tomo" Thaiyanont, Pathradanai "Koen" Setsuwan, Jongbae Park and Kenta Tsujiya. The group was nominated for the MTV Asia Awards in 2008 and has two studio albums to its credit.

"We are very proud to be representing Thailand at one of the biggest festivals in Asia. We've been rehearsing our remixed songs," says Pop.

"For me, taking part in the festival is a dream come true," adds Jongbae, the band's only Korean member who's planning on taking his bandmates on a tour of his hometown.

ASF, a unique pop-culture festival and free concert, has attracted increasing attention, pulling in more than 25,000 foreign tourists. Last year, 4,000 foreigners came to South Korea to watch the show and, according to the festival website, more than 5,000 visitors are expected this year.

Up for awards

Nine Asian countries are sending acts, with Big Bang, Super Junior and Girls' Generation representing the host country and Gackt and mihimaru GT coming from Japan. Other big names include Chris Lee (China), Show Luo (Taiwan), Ekin Cheng (Hong Kong), Ho Ngoc Ha (Vietnam) and Agnes Monica (Indonesia) who, along with K-Otic, are in competition for the Best Asian Artist Award .

Korea's 2NE1 is up for Best New Asian Artist Award and Ruslana from the Ukraine is nominated for the Special Award. Japan's V6 are the special guests.

Agnes Monica has cleared the air over her song Allah Peduli (Allah cares) which has upset some Malaysians, saying that it was actually a gospel number.

The controversial song was banned by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council.

In an interview with Kosmo!, Agnes Monica said the controversy was the result of a "language problem" which should not create disharmony or suspicion.

Agnes Monica said, the song is not a commercial song for radio play but for church worship, adding that it was not an issue in the predominantly Muslim Indonesia.

The Selengor Islamic Council (MAIS) wants action to be taken to declare haram an Indonesian song entitled Allah Peduli (Allah Cares) because its lyrics, among other things, says "...sebab Allah Yesusku mengerti (...because my Allah Jesus is meaningful)."

Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa, the MAIS chairman said although he has not heard the song, it is appropriate to declare it haram considering that the song touches on sensitivity that affects the question of religion.

"In Islam, our belief in Allah does not have the same meaning as god which is worshipped other than Allah and Prophet Muhammad is his messenger, it is clear that we acknowledge Allah is One, therefore a prohibiton of the use of Allah by other religions is to avoid confusion among Muslims" he told reporters here Friday.

Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa, the MAIS chairman was asked to comment on the songs by Indonesian singer Agnes Monica. In that song, the word Allah is repeated several times and the words 'because my Allah Jesus is meaningful' is heard in the final verse of the song which runs for 3 minutes 40 seconds.

Datuk Mohamad Adzib said "There is among us who do not understand the lyrics and sing it blindly. The lyrics affect our faith unconsciously,"

Datuk Mohamad Adzib said MAIS will declare the song haram and will withdraw all albums in circulation that contain this song to scrutinise it.

Datuk Mohamad Adzib said. "We are asking the relevant authorities at the Federal level to monitor and take appropriate action to protect the sanctity of Islam,"
